As Told by Event Planner André Wells

What are the most important items for outdoor entertaining?
If and when the space allows, tents offer opportunities for shelter, beauty, air and heat, and comfortable elements away from insects and other environmental woes. Next, bug spray! You want your guests to be able to enjoy the ambiance of the event without the hassle of creepy critters. Consider having blankets on hand for flexible seating in different areas of the party location. Because the ground can be uncomfortable over long periods, you’ll also need indoor/outdoor pillows. Remember to have candles or other small but sturdy trinkets nearby to hold those blankets down in case of strong winds.
Proper Handling of Outdoor Sips and Noshes
It’s vital to have a menu with a long outdoor shelf life. Consider fruits, vegetables and a variety of fizzy beverages like fruit-essence seltzers. Keep meat, salad and other heat-sensitive items in a climate-controlled area, only to be present during plating time.
Ideal Outdoor Entertaining Hours
When planning an outdoor event during an East Coast summer, timing is vital! You want partygoers to be comfortable — enjoying their experience, remembering the laughs shared and memories made. While we aren’t able to control Mother Nature’s temperature, Wells advises hosts to avoid midday hours while the sun is at its peak and lean more into the late evening when the sun is near its rest.
