Adventure Theatre and Adventure Theatre MTC Academy have been encouraging the community to be adventurous about theater for upwards of 60 years. Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo, Maryland, offers theatergoers programming geared toward children performed by professional actors.
“Our productions are enjoyed by children of all ages—0 to 99 years of age!” Managing Director Leon Seeman says.
Leon and his colleagues are extremely passionate about their mission: to educate and inspire new generations of theater artists with exceptional theatrical experiences.
The upcoming season includes the following productions: Fancy Nancy’s Splendiferous Christmas running now through Jan. 6, Huckleberry Finn’s Big River Feb. 8 through March 10, Winnie the Pooh March 29 through May 26 and The Cat in the Hat June 21 through Aug. 18.
Their professional actors have extensive training in theater arts and have performed everything from musical theater to Shakespeare. The experience of live theater is vastly different compared to a child watching their favorite character on television. Live theater sparks a child’s imagination and invites them to become part of the world created by the play they are watching. Kids who become inspired and want to experience this world firsthand can participate in the ATMTC Academy.
ATMTC Academy is located in Rockville, Maryland, and offers musical theater training for children and teens. The Elementary Program is offered for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Fundamentals including stage performance basics, vocal instruction and simple Broadway dance combinations are covered.
The Pre-Professional Company trains talented students grades 4 through 12 to become working musical theater professionals in the industry. Several of these students have performed at Studio Theatre, Signature Theatre, Ford’s Theatre, Olney Theatre, Arena Stage and Broadway.
An elite program, the Pre-Professional Company accepts only those students who possess and demonstrate exceptional talent and ability in singing, dancing and acting. Open to all levels, ATMTC’s Conservatory Program also provides comprehensive musical theater training for students grades 4 through 12. Each semester, Pre-Professional Company and Conservatory students receive extensive training in ballet, acting, jazz, music theory, tap and diction.
Alumni of the academy have gone on to earn scholarships to study theater at colleges, universities and conservatories. They have grown up to become professional actors on Broadway, on television, performing with professional national touring theater companies, acting in independent films, earning commercial work and more. Students who have not chosen to pursue acting as a career have used the skills they learned to give persuasive presentations at work, to become case-winning lawyers and even work in local government as public servants. Several graduates have come back to pay forward what they learned at the academy and teach the next generation of actors in the making.
Moreover, alumni have paid forward what they have gained from their experience at ATMTC by donating funds to rebuild the theater that suffered a fire last year. Theater patrons and local partners also worked hard to raise money and rebuild the theater. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand re-opening of the renovated theater was celebrated this past October. Adventure Theatre thanks all for their support and looks forward to a bright future illuminated by spotlights on their stage.
